“We publish sentences we cannot fully account for — the ones that leave a room slightly rearranged.”
There is a particular quiet that follows a sentence you did not expect to be true. It is not the quiet of resolution. It is the quiet of recalibration — the small, private moment in which a reader adjusts their sense of what a room, a coastline, a marriage, might actually contain. This issue is built around that quiet. We have not chosen these six pieces because they resemble one another, or because they resemble anything we have published before. We have chosen them because each one, in its own register, asked us to hold still.
